If she happens to forget the kitten is around she's all up in my face wanting loves, like normal(like right now).
I do not, at this stage, want to reveal the name of the artist in question. They have been very friendly and pleasant at a professional level and I don't want to tarnish their name or anything, I just want some ideas about how to communicate with them more effectively.
Here's a basic summary of the situation.
26/01/2011 - After discussions of what I wanted and what they were able to produce the (at this stage very enthusiastic)the artist confirmed via email that my commission was slotted for the two weeks between June 6 and June 17 ("give or take". Later that day they confirmed that they had received my payment of $300, a 50% deposit for the piece (a significant sum of money, in my opinion, but something I was and am certainly willing to pay for the piece)
15/05/2011 - The artist sent an email explaining that, as a result of personal circumstances, they would be rescheduling and that "The latest I would start your (piece)... under this new schedule, would be mid July, and it would be finished and in the mail before August."
19/07/2011 - Sent out a bulk email to commission clients "...you may need to wait longer than expected for your product".
1/11/2011 - The artist sent a note on an art website stating that had made some but not all of the components for my piece but that they had not taken photos yet.
1/01/2012 - The artist sent out a bulk note to all commissioners on an art site stating that they intended to have all work completed before they left for FC.
18/01/2012 - The artist posted photos of the parts they had completed for my commission. It was still not entirely complete.
This is the last time I have spoken to or heard from the artist and I am unsure of how to proceed from here. I am concerned that if I push too much they may not complete my commission at all, and after waiting so long I really don't want to give up now (especially when I have already paid a $300 deposit!). What would be a polite and non-confrontational way to ask this artist what the progress of my piece is and when I can expect it to be completed? How much longer do you all think it is reasonable to wait without being given a deadline.
Oh, and in case it makes a difference to your opinions on what I should do, I do know for certain that the artist is currently producing other work.
I try to be as patient as possible with artists I commission and I really don't want to be a bitch or anything. I just need to know when would be an appropriate time to contact this person without being unreasonable and hassling them and what exactly I should be asking them for (a concrete deadline? more frequent contact? a refund?)
Please help!

I'm afraid I have limited proof for this one because almost all of the discussion happened on Tapestries; it's an adult muck (sort of like a chat client, but with rooms and player descriptions etc.) and has a policy against reposting content from the muck to protect people's privacy. But if Ishara sees this and agrees that I can post my literal logs, it'd be allowed and I'd happily do so.
September 2011 I advertised some Iron Artist commissions on a bulletin board in a popular public gathering place. One of the people who responded was "Ishara". He wanted several commissions. I spent 2 hours answering his questions and he decided to get 4 commissions; two forms of the same character, two outfits each. We agreed young form would be in her late teens, since I don't draw naked kiddies.
He sent me an e-mail. He noted that payment might be delayed, via the muck I said it was fine. Later he prompted me for preliminaries, I told him I'd start as soon I got payment, since my TOS (which I showed him) states that I want full payment in advance for commissions under €50,- and the Iron Artist commissions are €30,-
He said he'd pay and I didn't hear from him again.
I was a little annoyed that I wasted so much of my time on him and I suspected he was hoping he could have made off with some sketches without paying, but since I hadn't started sketching I figured there was no harm, no foul and I just forgot about him.
Plus, given the chance he just changed his mind and was too embarrassed to just tell me I didn't bother him, even though I saw him around the muck.
Fast forward to a few days ago; I recently opened for some small, cheap commissions and advertised this on the same bulletin board. No prizes for guessing who contacted me.
Seemingly having forgotten the incident a year before he contacted me with the exact same questions as before. I verified that it was the same person by providing some info from their e-mail and told them that, in light of their non-payment I would not take on their commissions.
They replied the next day and told me "Oh well I must have forgot that then." and told me it must have been before he was kicked out of his home which he later cited was for financial reasons; I emphasize, he was negotiating 4x€30,- commissions in a period he became homeless for financial reasons.
He told me that if I couldn't understand his situation that I could take my attitude and find other paying customers and that I was rude for not accepting him as one. But if I wanted to give him a second chance he'd pay me extra this time.
As a note, his initial note asked me for an "estimate" on the commissions despite the fact their price was clearly stated at €5,- But he didn't have a lot of money and had to "budget it in" because he only gets paid once a month.
So does everyone in the Netherlands, not sure what frequency has to do with it but I digress.
I told him it was not up for discussion and blocked him. Thinking that was the last I'd hear of it.
Wrong.
I come into the public area the next day and a friend tells me to look at the bulletin board on which Ishara had posted a lengthy and one-sided diatribe, preceded by the weaksauce disclaimer that he didn't want to make it public, but I didn't "man up". Not sure what I was supposed to "man up" for, but what followed was a sob story about how he lost his job and his home and had no money to live off and how I was a big meanie poopoohead for not accepting his commission. I was short sighted and blah blah good riddance and I'll never contact you again.
I didn't respond in any way and just hung around with friends when Ishara came in and loudly stated on OOC that "she is ignoring Thaily now from this point on".
Wah.
I filed a report with the muck's moderators, since the BB is not supposed to be used to attack people. But like I said before, just want to warn you guys; I'm really glad I didn't start without payment and glad I declined his request for a commission the second time around. His attitude is pretty entitled and generally rotten, plus his stories don't add up.

I got an email today from paypal saying that someone had initiated a credit card chargeback for an etsy order. It claimed that "this purchase was made without authorization to use the the credit card".
Since I hadn't shipped the item yet, I thought it was a bit weird but I would go ahead with it and cancel the order. I did so, and 5 minutes later got an email from paypal saying that their bank had charged them a fee for the chargeback, so they in turn charged me $20. So now I'm very annoyed at being out $20.
I hadn't been contacted by the "buyer" at all. The etsy ship name and address was the same as the paypal info for the person, and from thier feedback I could see they had made prior successful purchases on etsy. So I'm a bit skeptical that it wasn't fraudulent card use and just impatience. (my shop has a 14 day production time on everything, today was day 12 and I was about to ship it this morning). I should have checked with them first before saying okay to the chargeback.
So - if you need to do a chargeback on someone, ask them to refund you via paypal first. And if you get a request for a chargeback, refund via paypal instead of saying yes to the chargeback. Or else you'll be out $20.
I'm aware I made several mistakes during the transaction and interaction, but I'm aware of how I went wrong and point it out as I go as far as I can remember. Onto the story.
A while ago I got into fursuiting and joined a group on dA specifically for it. Then I came across the girl (who I will not name) and commented on her partial. We started to become friends and found we had lots in common. I gave her my facebook since she didn't have any other form of messaging and we talked through there. Everything is all rainbows and sunshine.
Later on I start working on my own partial and come to a huge problem: I can't fur things to save my life. So I start talking to this friend about it and she offers to fur it for me, in exchange for a head base I had already made. But, she requests (this is kind of an important part, at least to me) that I make a bunny muzzle so she can make a bunny goat out of it. So we exchange addresses and I get a big box and put both heads and fur fabric inside. Giving her the payment at the same time was my second mistake, right after trusting a 13 year old I met on the internet. I'm clingy and I trust people really quick, I know that.
It gets to her house, and during a stream she shows it to me to prove that she has it and has worked on it. She then shows me a progress picture on facebook. Very quick, I was happy.
But then my best friend told me she was being mean to him in chats and/or comments on fb. And she repeatedly said I should break up with my girlfriend. I was mildly annoyed, but I let it slide since I assumed she was joking with the latter.
About a month or so goes by. I wanted the head back so I could take it to a meeting. So I give her a due date. She had worked so fast on most of it and it looked like she didn't have much left to finish, so why not?
She said she couldn't and apologized, and that she couldn't take pictures either so she just sent me the first picture again and I took that.
Another month goes by and I pester her a little about it. I believe at this point she took another picture, and it looked exactly the same as before. I was a little surprised. She was still being mean about my friends, and I was starting to get mad. But I felt like I couldn't tell her to stop or do anything since she still had my head.
Around this time she said that she was working on her own suit, a dragon. In a journal post she said for a head base she was going to use a head from a trade she did "a long time ago". Then posted pictures of said WIP a few days later. Immediately I noticed it was the same head base I had traded with her, though the nose was modified. This wouldn't bother me so much if she hadn't specifically asked for a bunny muzzle that I had worked hard to make so she could just rip it off and create a new one from scratch.
This time I pestered her about getting my head back, since I assumed she had finished it. She had it for four months in total. I know that's not a long time to wait for a fursuit head, but she had gotten everything except the end of the snout and ears done within a week or so of receiving it.
I got a response with a long list of things that had happened to her recently as a reason why she couldn't send it. Her mom had lung problems and fought with her dad and he kicked them out and now they barely get money and I forget the rest. She did end up sending it, but with a little surprise and my major complaint: When I opened the box, the entire head reeked of smoke and had to sit in our garage for another month to air out. Her mom is a (possibly former) smoker.
She does not warn of this anywhere on the things she sells, nor did she tell me about it. Not on the stuffed animals, the suit heads, the tails, any lot at all. I'm not allergic, but what if somebody was and bought an item from her? That's my major concern.
Today I found an auction by her of a lot of fursuit items. One of these is the head base that I had traded with her, almost completely unrecognizable. Though I don't have a problem with that. What I do have a problem with is the lack, again, of smoke warning.
So I comment on her auction warning buyers about this. She deleted my comment and put a "smoke-free home" label at the end of the description. In one of my last conversations with her she did say her mom quit, but I know that fursuit head has been sitting in smoke for at least a few months.
I'm concerned but I don't really know if I should actually be angry with her or if I reacted wrong.
Sorry for the length and any mistakes.

WHEN:
the commission started on April 19th
May 31st and not a penny paid for the finished commission
PROOF:
After getting suspicious of her ignoring notes asking if she's able to pay yet, I went to someone else who drew a commission for her. All I have for proof that she is indeed ripping people off for free art is this: http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk25
(currently asking another person who drew a commission for her if they got paid)
EXPLAIN:
Basically I was commissioned 2 badges for $20 though it was extra charge for the required photo paper and sending them off for $7 more, after showing uploads of the WIP I made the mistake of sending off the badges and uploading the final versions, believing them when they said they would pay when they could but were having troubles with Paypal.
After almost a month of waiting, I contacted another person who had drawn for her and they were never paid, also. There were a couple other shady features about her through her gallery and page on FA and DA.
I'm not 100% sure on if this person really IS going around ripping people off for free art and not paying, but after me and someone else being jipped of money for art, I'd rather be cautious then let this happen to future artists and commissioners.

TLDR: A £90 commission for a tail - high price due to specialised material requested for the tail itself (cost £40). Material was only half used, and the half that was used was subsequently ruined as part of the "repairs" process.
Artist agreed to a full refund but has subsequently has refused to refund any money, then changed mind and offered to refund only 1/3rd of the money.
I have recieved no usable goods to this day, and those unusable have been returned to the maker for repairs.

Nothing too fussy, just a nice portrait with some detail. My reference is thanks to Crystal-Claw on deviantART.

Block-in from today. Needs some adjustment (he's a bit too wide along the body at the moment)
The background will be worked on, too. Greenish out-of-focus foliage with the odd touch of reddish brown, and a few long grasses poking up from the bottom.
Digital prelim for a planned painting:

Forgive me, but that one's going to be a stunner ;)
Goodness knows when I'll start it, though.
Gorgeous ref thanks to redbeard31 on deviantART.
The En-Joy-Art and Craft fayre at Cranford Hall was this past weekend, 26th & 27th May. As expected, being a small village and given that the weather was stunning, it was quite quiet, with only a handful of visitors passing through my roon on each of the days. However I sold a few bookmarks and the mini Tawny Owl painting, and managed to cover my costs and just squeeze a v. small profit, which is better than nothing! And I had positive comments from everyone who did pass through, and a few business cards got taken. So it's all good.
Photos from the weekend of my display (with thanks to my boyfriend for helping me set it up, and his dad for lending me the display boards!):

My table (which I abandoned and decided to sit on the windowsill at left, blocking my paintings - well, it was a warm spot!!)

Red Kite giclee print, bookmarks basket, Exuberance 6 on the desk easel.

Paintings display no1. These were smart. I was disappointed more people didn't see!

Paintings display no2, with smaller canvases and prints. (People seemed to like the Black Cat a lot.)

Minis. (The Tawny Owl sold!)

I was wondering if anybody had any tips or advice on keeping my pup happy during a very long train trip.
When we travel, Linus will be a 10 month old pug/lab cross. He's very energetic, and takes a lot of exercise. He's taken a few plane rides already, so he's used to travelling, but this is a different kettle of fish.
We leave Winnipeg by train at 10:30 pm on the 31st of July, and arrive in Toronto at 9:30 am on August 2nd. There'll be 3 half hour stops along the way, the first at 5:30 am on the 1st, the second at 3:35pm, and the third one at midnight, and those will be my only opportunities to walk him. He has to stay kennelled in the baggage car for the duration otherwise, although I am able to visit him, I won't be able to take him to my cabin to play or cuddle.
I plan on going in to feed him a few hours before the stops so he doesn't end up full and uncomfortable, since he won't soil his kennel, but I'm worried that he'll get stir-crazy and go a little nuts spending so much time in his crate without relief. He'll be stressed out, and likely a bit hard to handle once we get to Toronto.
Any ideas on how to keep him calm and satisfied during this long-haul?
- Location:Canada,
Anybody in the Ottawa/Gatineau area?? This guy is in serious need of an upgrade, or maybe just a peaceful end.. I would be willing to chip in for vet/trailering costs. I am too far away to help him myself.
I'm keeping her on a grain-free diet and she's tried:
Taste of the Wild: Roasted Bison and Venison
Acana: Duck and Bartlett Pear
Blue Buffalo: Wilderness Puppy Chicken recipe
She also gets an omega 3 supplement every day with her food, gets treated with freeze-dried chicken breast and occasionally will get canned pumpkin in her food.
Do you folks have any preferences? I'm just curious to know what you feed your dogs for food and treats and if you give any supplements!

Here's the little ginger jelly roll on her 1st birthday, yesterday. (:

Psst. I’ve got a secret for you. Come closer. No. Closer. Shhhh, don’t tell anyone, but…
IF YOU’RE GOING TO LIE YOUR ASS OFF ABOUT THE HORSE’S TEMPERAMENT MAKE SURE YOU DON’T INCLUDE A VIDEO THAT DEMONSTRATES HER HOT TEMPERAMENT!
…as she floats effortlessly over ground littered with treacherous land mines in the form of mini boulders. Good gawd! I know not everyone has access to beautifully groomed arenas and sometimes you gotta make do with what ya got. But I have NEVER heard of a field owner being opposed to someone removing the massive rocks from their field. Rocks are no one’s friends; unless we’re talking about Easter Island, I’m sure rocks are their friends.
People unfamiliar with horses and their propensity towards hurting themselves on the most innocuous of objects are probably all “what’s the big deal!”. But to a trainer, a person with (theoretically) experience around, and knowledge of, horses those rocks should appear to be the dangerous hazards they are. Yes, my friends, if you go to the rider’s website, she advertises herself as a trainer. Teaching the valuable (and apparently necessary) skill of rock avoiding, no doubt.
Here’s another tip, if you have to lunge the horse to the point where it is dripping sweat before you get on, it’s temperament is probably not a 4 out of 10. Just something to keep in mind next time you try to pawn off a 14 year old relatively untrained TB mare.
One last thing; it’s a favorite saying over at Snarky Rider:
Just because it has a uterus, doesn’t mean it needs a baby!
“Bred to the right stallion her foal could jump the moon!” -bred to the right stallion, any mare’s foal could jump the moon. It’s a genetic crap shoot where you manipulate the odds in your favor by breeding two talented horses. With this mare’s uterus in the mix, you’re not exactly decreasing your risk of producing a dud.
This really nice lady contacted me and came to see him this morning. She wants to try a 30-day trial, which I have no problem with. My question is: He currently has front shoes and his next appointment is in 2 weeks, right in the middle of that 30-day stint. Do I just let it go and see if they end up keeping him and they can shoe him then? Or do I see if I can get my blacksmith to do him at their place (it's literally only 3 miles away)and I'd cover the cost?
Also, I was reading through the memories, just wanted to get some more opinions. If this turns into a free-lease situation, do you think it's reasonable for me to cover things like dentist and routine vaccinations/Coggins and equipment for him (ie blankets, flymask) and they cover blacksmith and any non-routine vet stuff?
(Sadly, no pictures to illustrate this entry. Stupid iPad.)

Here's the verbage from this issue:
All good things come to an end, and EMG-Zine is no exception. It is, surprisingly, not with a heavy heart or with reluctance that I am announcing that we will be folding up our publication at the end of the year, but with a certain amount of joy, and a whole lot of pride.
The Tower card in the tarot deck is an uncomfortable card, dealing with failure, ruin, upheaval and sudden, brutal realization of falsehoods. It would be easy to take the theme of this month and the timing of this announcement as an admittance of failure and look at the closure of EMG-Zine as a disaster. I choose to do otherwise - I am deeply proud of what we've accomplished, and I am even more pleased that we were able to prove the 'zine financially solvent in its last year. By the end of this run, we will have produced 84 issues and run without breaks and only minimal delays (a day, I think, was the latest we ever released?), for seven years. We've published three amazing print anthologies, hundreds of articles and hundreds of pieces of fiction, poetry and artwork.
I look forward to ending on an unprecedented high note, and plan to deliver you the remaining six issues absolutely stuffed with the great advice, stories, poetry, artwork and reviews you've come to expect from us. Those of you with subscriptions that extend past the end of the year will receive offers of pro-rated refunds. Funds that have come in this year towards programming improvements will still be earmarked for that coding - with a focus on making our archives more search-friendly and accessible. The site will remain available for the foreseeable future, so that you can always come back and catch up on the issues you missed, or use it for research when you've got a business or technique question. There is the possibility, given enough interest, of running a Kickstarter campaign to fund a fourth volume of the Art of the Business of Fantasy Art, which would encompass the best of our last four years.
I can't say that having Elsa doesn't play some role in this - there is nothing she doesn't influence, really - but this is much less about 'being mom' and much more about looking at the balance of workloads, rewards, nagging I have to do, and the inspiration and joy it brings. It's not even about hackers, though don't underestimate their role in adding to my workload, or the grief they brought me. I will also admit that I never got the project up to the level I really wanted to... the work that it would have taken to really polish the site the way I really wanted it to be was pretty intimidating. I took it far... just not quite as far as I dreamed it could go, and guilt for not investing the time it would have taken to get it there contributes some to this decision, too.
I don't like having dangling commitments, or pushing things past their natural lives, and I HATE watching projects fizzle without direction... I think this is a wonderful, strong place to leave things, and I'm really hoping these last 6 months send us out with a bang.
On THAT note, I'd like to ask you guys to help me make it a really strong last surge - send me your tutorials and articles! Review an art product or service! Submit artwork, fiction and poetry to our upcoming themes! (The games theme has a deadline of today, then there are reflections, Greek mythology, magic, wolves and stars.) If you need ideas for something to write about, or if you want to know if something you've already written would be appropriate, let me know! Also, I need questions for Ursula's Ask an Artist - http://emg-zine.com/askanartist.php
To soften the blow a little, I'll post some cute baby photos from earlier this week in the next entry...
(PS: Anthologies are available for purchase again!)
Thanks!
